In a powerful tribute to Mandela Day, the Guardian Angel Wildlife and Marine Trust (GAWMT) is launching an inspiring youth upliftment initiative in Alexandra. The event, taking place on July 18 at the Altrec Sports Complex, aims to combat youth unemployment, environmental neglect, and disillusionment through community engagement and opportunity.
In partnership with the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) and the South African National Service Institute (SANSI), the day promises an action-packed programme. Highlights include precision drill displays, parades, mural painting, a helicopter landing, and environmental awareness activities.
The day will begin with a 67-minute, horse-led walk and a clean-up campaign, aligning with Mandela Day’s call to give back. More than just a day of service, the event seeks to plant seeds of environmental responsibility and career aspiration among Alexandra’s youth—many of whom have never experienced wildlife or marine life firsthand.
GAWMT founder Raymond Kramer emphasized the long-term vision: “This initiative isn’t just about the day—it’s about breaking cycles of poverty and igniting purpose.” The programme will also unveil a national youth development campaign, offering vocational training, personal development, and potential job placement in collaboration with government partners.
The model draws on the success of a recent SANSI pilot programme at the Dunnottar military base, where over 600 young recruits completed a rigorous three-month course. With structure, discipline, and opportunity at its core, this Mandela Day initiative represents a bold step toward empowerment and environmental change.
